Eight Workshop on Everyday Virtual Reality

Traditionally, Virtual and Augmented Reality have been conceived for purpose-built highly instrumented laboratories. However, the commercial release of consumer grade Virtual and Augmented Reality head-mounted displays has allowed a wider user base to experience VR and AR in everyday environments such as their own home or work environments. If consumer VR and AR is to evolve beyond the laboratory, a rethinking of the way we design and implement interactive VR and AR systems for these environments application scenarios is needed.

The WEVR workshop will cover “Everyday” Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality research themes in all those contexts and scenarios other than research laboratories and specialist environments.

This half-day workshop will bring together researchers and industry practitioners to explore these new challenges and define a new research agenda. We invite authors to submit 4-page position papers, preliminary research results, novel concepts or case studies (up to a maximum of 6 pages). Page limits do not include references.

Location

The workshop will be held online, more instructions to follow.

Topics of interest

We invite submissions pertaining to the intersection between the following themes (but are not limited to) and “everyday” contexts of use such as user’s homes and offices.

  • Gameplay Design and Player Interaction in consumer VR/AR
  • Overcoming constraints of ordinary environments (e.g. locomotion techniques, object avoidance)
  • Tangible and haptics support to interaction with the environment
  • Interactivity and input modalities
  • Co-located and Remote Social & Collaborative VR/AR and related challenges
  • 3D User Interfaces for Desktop or semi-immersive VR
  • VR/AR for home, healthcare and education
  • Effects of prolonged VR use in domestic settings
  • New trends in VR applications
  • New tracking systems (head, hands, body etc.)
  • Cross-Reality Interaction (e.g., between immersed and non-immersed users)
  • VR/AR development for non-technical creators

Research works on the above themes that do not focus on everyday contexts are not suitable for this workshop.

Important Dates AOE

  • Submission Deadline: 10 January 2022
  • Notification: 20 January 2022
  • Camera-Ready: 29 January 2022
  • Workshop: TBD (12 - 13 March 2022)

Submission Information

Papers must be submitted via the PCS system. Once logged in, in the submissions tab, select VR in the Society dropdown list, then IEEE VR 2022 in the next dropdown, and then the IEEE VR 2022 Workshop: Everyday Virtual Reality in the track dropdown. Finally, press the Go button to create a new submission entry.

Submissions must be anonymised and in PDF format, using the VGTC template. Papers will need to be submitted using the PCS website.

At least one author per paper must register for the workshop as well as one day of the IEEE VR conference. Authors of accepted papers will be expected to give a 10-minute presentation at the workshop. The workshop is held virtually online, consisting of three sessions with breaks in between. Each session has three presentations and will be followed by 15 minutes of discussions in panel-format led by the workshop organizers. We will also seek an external keynote speaker or expert panelist to talk on a major topic of the workshop. The workshop Proceedings will be submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Digital Library.

Reviewing process

All papers will be reviewed by at least two domain experts. Publication in the workshop does not prohibit future (non-verbatim) publications as full or short papers or journal articles based on new developments resulting from an accepted workshop paper.

Review decisions will be final. The authors of accepted papers are then expected to resubmit a revised version taking into account the comments made in the reviews.

Last Minute Paper Resubmission

Papers that were rejected from IEEE VR and that fit the workshop themes can be resubmitted for special consideration at the workshop. In order to do so, please submit a revised version of the paper you submitted to IEEE VR via PCS including your meta-review as well as a summary of changes (max one A4 page) as additional content. All papers who do not fulfil these conditions will not be considered. In the summary, please describe how you addressed the points raised in the meta-review. Please note that papers have to fit within the 6 page limit.

These papers will not be reviewed a second time, but accepted on the basis of a juried process on how well the issues raised in the previous review process were addressed.
